Our Vision

The word Hackhurst is likely to have derived from Old English: hack may come from either haecc referring to a ‘gate’ (usually to a forest), or hēah meaning ‘high’. Hyrst is Old English for ‘hillock’ or ‘wooded eminence’ referring to a wooded hill. Thus, Hackhurst Farm’s name may signify ‘Forest Gate’ or ‘High Wood’. The etymology evokes for us a sense of connection to all ancestors who tended to this land and wisely planted trees that witnessed and supported the cycle of life over centuries.

We consider ourselves guardians of the land at Hackhurst Farm. With that in mind, we endeavour to eventually pass on the land in a healthier state than we found it by enriching its diversity and improving the soil condition in such a way that future generations of all species may thrive here. We seek to develop reciprocal relationships with the land by learning how to listen to and converse with its natural intelligence.

It is our vision to both make use as well as take care of this land in collaboration with like-minded people and businesses that follow agro-ecological and organic principles. Thus, we hope to build, maintain and increase its resources with due reverence for the land and all its inhabitants.
