The Farm
Current dictionary definitions of the word Nature purposely exclude humans. Our focus here at Hackhurst Farm is to define ourselves back into Nature by working in a respectful way with the land, striving towards a relationship of reciprocity, finding a balance between giving and taking, as well as by listening to, connecting with, learning from, and expressing gratitude for, the land that feeds and heals us.
While vegetarianism can certainly be an appropriate personal choice or ethos, the agroecological approach to farming also recognises that responsible animal husbandry in many ways optimises soil health and enhances the capacity of natural ecosystems to thrive. A respectful relationship with grazing animals can promote the production of healthy, organic, nutrient-dense food. We therefore use a holistic grazing approach at the Farm, in collaboration with Imogen and David of Butterworth Farmers, to regenerate soil, increase the diversity of vegetation and insect populations, whilst also prioritising the welfare of all animals on the land. These efforts enable us to offer local food that is delicious, affordable as well as health-enhancing.
Organic, Ethical and Cow with Calf Micro Dairy
Butterworth Farmers were established in 2022 with five pedigree Dexter cows and the herd has since increased to over 30 animals. Dexters are a dual-purpose, heritage and native breed of cattle, producing excellent quality milk and beef. The animals are grass-fed throughout the year and the calves are allowed to stay with their mum’s to suckle until they are ready to self-wean. We are currently applying for Pasture for Life certification and beginning the organic conversion of the Farm.
Imogen and David milk their girls out in the fields and use the milk to make cheese and other dairy products that are available for sale. This makes Hackhurst Farm the first Dexter-only dairy in the UK since 1983.
After repeated requests at local agricultural shows to cuddle their cows, Imogen and David felt moved to provide this opportunity for people seeking closer connection with these beautiful animals. They will be offering cow cuddling sessions soon.
We are also looking to expand our Share-Farming collaboration at Hackhurst Farm to include an experienced horticulturist to set up and run a community-supported agriculture (CSA) market garden that will provide organic vegetables for our retreat and seminar kitchen as well as to the local community. If you're interested in starting a garden from scratch and running your own enterprise, please do get in touch.
